GUSTAV G. KLUTSIS (1895-1944) [THE USSR IS THE ACTION BRIGADE OF THE WORLD'S PROLETARIAT.] 1931.
56x39 7/8 inches. Ogiz-Izogiz, Moscow.
Condition B+: minor tears in margins and along seam of two sheets. Framed.
Born in Latvia, Klutsis studied at the influential Svomas/Vchutemas art school under Malevitch and Pevsner (1918-1922) and then went on to become a founding member of "October," a group of artists dedicated to serving the needs of the proletariat all over the USSR. Klutsis became the Soviet Union's most prolific photomontage virtuoso, designing emblematic posters to inspire the Communist cause throughout the twenties and thirties. In 1938, despite his exceptional work for the cause, Stalin had Klutsis arrested and executed. This rare, classic poster is one of his most famous. It is an extremely powerful image with a sophisticated layout and progressive typography. Utopia cover and p. 55, Images of Power p. 83. Utopia, Ilusion y Adaptacion - Arte Sovietico, 1928-1945, IVAM, Valencia, Spain, 1996 - reproduced on the front cover and on p.55, full color page.
